Upper Yakima River (Class I-II)

Upper Yakima River Scenery near Cle Elum

  • Put-in: Teanaway River Bridge
  • Length: 2.5-3 hours without stopping
  • Equipment Avaiable: Rafts, Kayaks, Fishing gear

Rafting the Upper Yakima River will be the highlight of your week. It is a great section for first-time rafters looking for a thrill, experienced paddlers, families with kids, groups of friends, and company team-building outings.

If you're a newbie but are feeling confident in your paddling skills, head to the Upper for more rapids and faster flowing water. The Upper Yakima is suitable for novices; however, we recommend that participants have spent a little time on rivers (swimming, canoeing, kayaking, tubing or rafting) and understand how moving water is different than still water. This section has one set of class II rapids, which is usually the highlight of your trip but are easily avoided.

Beginning on the Teanaway River in pine forests, your group will quickly descend into the drier shrub-steppe of Eastern Washington. Because of the drop in elevation, from mountains to plains, this section of the river is swift and somewhat choppy. There are still plenty of calm areas to swim and relax between the small rapids. The open landscape is ideal for spotting wildlife.

The trip takes 2.5 to 3 hours without stopping, but most groups spend 3.5 to 4 hours on the water.

Reservations made within 48 hours of departure must be made at (509) 964-2530
